Real-Time Text

Description

Provides real-time, text-based, telephony services — a solution for the hard-of-hearing, speech-impaired, and others who cannot use the full array of possibilities offered by cell-phone technology (though this technology could also be attractive to the youth market).

Other alternatives, such as text messaging, email, and chat do not reflect the full dynamics of direct communication through a mobile device (they are non-conversational, store-and-forward applications). Real-Time Text, on the other hand, is an open standard (RFC 5194) that provides the ubiquity and unique benefits of voice calling, but in textual form.

The application is connection-based: you call the other party, they answer the "call", and as you type the text displays on the handset of the called party. They can also type while you type, with a split screen showing both simultaneously, allowing interruption and true conversational messaging.
